About
He is neither an alcohol-swilling private detective nor a local tough looking to earn a quick dime. Well, he is looking to make a dime, and maybe some more. He lives in northern Virginia with his wife, Sarah, and his son, Wally. Often he gazes out of his office, reflecting on what it might take to do either and what the costs might be.

His background isn’t in creative writing and doesn’t hold an MFA. Rather, he was a historian who earned a PhD in German history and left a bit of himself Berlin. Jack taught history in both highschool and college classrooms but decided to hang it up after dedicating fifteen years to the study of the past. The tweed elbow-pad jackets were a plus, though.
He works as a web developer, which is a far cry from the seedy underworld of Restrock. So far, he’s never encountered fedora-wearing gangsters or chain-smoking dames, but he does frequent coffee-stained linoleum diners where pancake stacks are tall and smothered in syrup. Jack writes in the early morning hours before his son wakes up or in the late hours after his son has fallen asleep. He is not sure when he himself gets sleep.
Jack Garratt is working on his first novella featuring the star private detective, Dick Butterknife.
